What are the legal requirements for large goods vehicles?
When it comes to showing signs and symbols, Large Goods Vehicles (LGVs), also known as Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs), have to obey particular rules in the UK. These laws are supposed to make roads safer by making it easier for other people to see the vehicles and letting them know how big and heavy they are and if they are carrying any dangerous products.
These are the main rules of the law:
Heavy Goods Vehicle Sign: If a vehicle weighs more than 3.5 tonnes, it needs to have the Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) or Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) sign on it.
The notice tells other drivers on the road to be careful because the vehicle is big and heavy.
A "Long Vehicle" sign with a yellow background and black writing (approximately 1200 mm × 100 mm) must be readily visible on trucks that are longer than 13 meters.
There should be red and yellow reflector markers on the back of trailers that weigh more than 3,500 kg and LGVs that weigh more than 7,500 kg.
These signs need to be highly obvious, especially at night or when it's pouring, to assist keep people safe.
These rear markings are often made using chevron designs.
